Overview
Shopify discount combinations let eligible product, order, and shipping discounts apply in the same checkout, while discount stacking refers more specifically to multiple savings affecting the same product or order. When Shopify's native discount editor cannot express the conditions you need, Regios Automatic Discounts adds a visual logic builder for rules based on customers, products, collections, markets, and cart contents while still following Shopify's underlying combination limits. With Biscuits Bundle Builder, Cart Transform runs before discounts, so Regios evaluates the resulting parent bundle line rather than the individual components inside it. This FAQ explains what can combine, what cannot, and how to test the final price before launching a promotion.

How do Shopify discount combinations work?
What is the difference between discount combinations and discount stacking?
A discount combination means that two or more eligible discounts can apply within the same cart. Discount stacking usually describes multiple savings affecting the same product or order. For example, a product discount and an order discount can combine in one checkout, with the order discount calculated after the product discount. Two product discounts affecting the same line are a more specific form of stacking and have additional Shopify Plus requirements.
Merchants often use the terms interchangeably, so the practical question is always the same: which cart lines each discount targets, which class each discount belongs to, and whether every participating discount allows the combination.
What are Shopify's three discount classes?
Shopify separates discounts into three classes. Product discounts reduce eligible products or collections. Order discounts reduce the order subtotal. Shipping discounts reduce eligible delivery charges. Amount-off, percentage, Buy X Get Y, and free-shipping offers can be delivered as automatic discounts or codes, depending on the discount type and setup.
Open each discount in Shopify Admin and use its Combinations section to choose whether it can work with product, order, or shipping discounts. Both discounts must allow the relevant combination. Enabling it on only one side is not enough.
What Shopify discounts can be combined?
Can product, order, and shipping discounts be combined?
Yes. Shopify supports product discounts with order discounts, product discounts with shipping discounts, order discounts with shipping discounts, and multiple order discounts. Product discounts can also coexist when they apply to different products. Multiple shipping discounts cannot apply to the same order.
| Combination | Supported? | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Product + order | Yes | Both discounts must allow the combination. |
| Product + shipping | Yes | Both discounts must allow the combination. |
| Order + shipping | Yes | Both discounts must allow the combination. |
| Two product discounts on different products | Yes | Each offer must target a different eligible line. |
| Two product discounts on the same product | Shopify Plus only | Reciprocal discount tags must be configured. |
| Two shipping discounts | No | Only one shipping discount can apply. |
Can you stack two product discounts on the same item?
By default, Shopify applies only one product discount to a line item. Shopify Plus stores can configure multiple product discounts on the same line by using reciprocal tags. For example, a discount tagged loyalty can allow discounts tagged seasonal, while the seasonal discount must also allow the loyalty tag. Without that two-way match, Shopify selects the best eligible product discount instead of stacking both.
Buy X Get Y promotions have extra restrictions. On most plans, products participating in the offer cannot receive another product discount. On Shopify Plus, additional product discounts can apply to the customer-gets product when the same-line stacking requirements are satisfied, but not to the customer-buys product.
How many discounts can apply, and in what order?
A customer can enter up to five product or order discount codes and one shipping discount code per order. A store can have up to 25 active automatic discounts, including app-based automatic discounts. Eligibility, combination settings, and the sales channel still determine the result.
Shopify calculates product discounts first, order discounts against the revised subtotal second, and shipping discounts last. If discounts are incompatible, Shopify chooses the best eligible discount or combination for the customer. Percentage order discounts are calculated against the same post-product-discount subtotal, so two order discounts of 10% and 20% produce 30% off that subtotal rather than a compounded 28% reduction.
What happens when Shopify's native discount rules aren't enough?
How does Regios Automatic Discounts extend Shopify's discount rules?
Shopify's native editor covers common eligibility, usage, and combination settings. More involved promotions may need nested conditions, different outcomes for different product groups, or rules based on customer tags, markets, variants, metafields, purchase history, and cart contents. Regios Automatic Discounts uses Shopify Functions and a visual logic builder to express those branches.
The supplied example checks that a customer is logged in and tagged wholesale, then applies different percentage discounts according to the product's collection.
Can Regios show discounted prices before checkout?
Yes. Regios can display eligible discounted prices, crossed-out original prices, descriptions, and savings badges on product pages. Its storefront display requires the relevant theme app block or embed to be configured. The discount itself can still work in the cart and checkout when those storefront display blocks are not shown, so test both the visual message and the final checkout calculation.
Does Regios bypass Shopify's discount combination limits?
No. Regios can create more advanced eligibility and discount logic, but its discounts still follow Shopify's combination rules. A Regios discount can combine with compatible native Shopify discounts when both discounts permit the applicable classes. It cannot make two incompatible discounts combine or make individual bundle components visible to a Discount Function.
One useful option is to create a single Regios discount that contains more than one type of saving, such as a product or order saving together with shipping logic. This can simplify an offer that would otherwise depend on separate discounts, but you should still test the final result alongside every other active automatic discount and code.
How do Shopify discount combinations work with bundles?
Do Shopify discounts apply to a bundle or its components?
For bundles built with Shopify's Cart Transform system, product and collection discounts need to target the parent bundle product or a collection containing that parent. Selecting only the component products does not make the bundle eligible. Shopify calculates the discount against the parent bundle line, then allocates the amount across its components for order and tax reporting.
This is separate from a bundle's built-in price. Biscuits Bundle Builder can use the sum of selected products, a fixed total, percentage or fixed-amount savings, and volume tiers. Those bundle price adjustments happen during Cart Transform before Shopify's Discount Functions run, so a compatible code or automatic discount can apply afterward. That also means you need to test for accidental double-discounting.
Does Regios Automatic Discounts work with Biscuits Bundles?
Yes, within Shopify's Cart Transform boundaries. Cart Transform runs first and produces the bundle line that Regios evaluates. Configure the Regios rule so the parent Biscuits bundle product, its collection, or another visible cart condition is eligible. Regios cannot independently target the individual components inside that bundle because Discount Functions receive the bundle line rather than independently discountable component lines.
First confirm the bundle's own cart price. Then apply the Regios discount and verify the parent bundle qualifies and the allocated component prices add back to the correct total. See how Shopify discounts work with Biscuits bundles for the bundle-specific behaviour.
How do you test Shopify discount combinations?
How do I check which discounts can combine?
In Shopify Admin, open Discounts and review the Combinations column or filter the list by the classes each discount combines with. Open every discount in your intended promotion and confirm its settings reciprocate. Then create a cart containing qualifying and excluded products, test as each relevant customer type, apply every intended code, and stop before payment once the checkout totals are confirmed.
For Regios rules, check each logic branch, then repeat the scenario in your storefront. For bundles, test the parent bundle product rather than assuming its components make it eligible. Also test regional, customer-tag, and sales-channel restrictions where relevant.
How do I prevent accidental over-discounting?
Calculate the worst-case basket before activating the promotion. Include the bundle's built-in price adjustment, every automatic discount, all permitted codes, and shipping savings. If a customer could qualify for overlapping offers, exclude that customer or product in the broader rule, place related savings into one controlled Regios flow, or remove the unwanted combination.
- Document the expected subtotal after each discount class.
- Test both qualifying and non-qualifying carts.
- Check guest, logged-in, wholesale, and tagged customer paths where relevant.
- Verify product-page messaging matches the cart and checkout.
- Repeat the test whenever another automatic discount becomes active.
Tip - Save one representative test cart for each promotion path. A short matrix of customer, product, bundle, code, and expected total is much easier to verify than relying on the discount titles alone.
