How to Show Different Shopify Markets Content in the Same Language

Overview

Yes, Shopify Translate & Adapt can show different supported content in markets that share the same language, such as English in the US and Canada. Market-specific theme banners and blocks have separate plan requirements. Changing promotional wording also does not change the price or shipping offer at checkout. This guide explains which settings to use and how to check that each market sees the intended content.

Can two Shopify Markets show different content in the same language?

Yes. You do not need a second language just to adapt content for another market. Shopify's Translate & Adapt requirements distinguish language translation from adapting your default language for different markets. For example, a merchant can keep English for both markets while changing regional wording.

Which product and page fields can be adapted by market?

Start with a supported resource, such as a product or page, and use its localization editor to see the fields available for adaptation. A product description could explain an assortment differently for each region without requiring a duplicate product. Avoid assuming every field on that product, or every piece of text visible on its storefront page, is controlled by the same editor.

Shopify's own Translate & Adapt listing illustrates English wording differences between the US and UK. The app is free; that does not mean every market-specific theme feature is included on every Shopify plan.

What does market context change for the shopper?

Language and market answer different questions. English tells you the language the shopper reads; the US or Canada market identifies the regional experience you want to serve. A Canadian shopper choosing English should not automatically receive every US-specific promise merely because the language matches.

Keep a country or region selector available when testing. Check the selected country and the wording together, rather than deciding that localization worked because the currency symbol changed. For the separate question of regional URLs and search-engine signals, see our guide to Shopify Markets international SEO.

Should you use Translate & Adapt, a catalog or shipping settings?

Use the setting responsible for the difference you want. Copy, theme content, product pricing and delivery charges are related parts of the experience, but editing one does not configure all four.

What needs to differ? Where to start Main limitation
Supported product or page wording Translate & Adapt Check the exact resource and field.
Homepage banner, announcement bar or block content Per-market theme customization Requires Advanced or higher, with compatible rendering.
Product prices or which products are sold Market catalogs Copy changes do not set a selling price.
Delivery charges or a free-shipping threshold Shipping settings The cart and destination must qualify.

Is the difference copy, an actual price or a delivery rule?

Use Translate & Adapt for the message. Its strength is regional wording. Its limit is that a sentence saying “free shipping” does not create a free delivery rate. Write the customer-facing promise after you know which offer the store can fulfil.

Use a catalog for product prices and availability. Shopify's market catalog documentation explains how catalogs control the products and prices offered in a market. A catalog is appropriate when a product needs a different selling price, not simply a different description.

Use shipping settings for delivery eligibility and cost. Stores using shipping profiles configure the applicable destinations and rates there. Stores upgraded to shipping options by market manage that setup through Markets. Use the shipping configuration available in your admin.

When do metafields need separate verification?

A metafield being visible in your theme does not prove it can be adapted through the same workflow as a product description. Identify the field, its type and the theme or app that renders it before prescribing a solution.

Shopify documents market-localizable metafields and metaobjects, so the blanket claim that metafields can only vary by language is too broad. However, API support does not establish that a particular field is available in Translate & Adapt or works with your app. Ask the developer to verify the exact field and rendering path instead of creating duplicate data as the first workaround.

How do you adapt supported content for a specific market?

Begin with one supported resource and a small change that is easy to recognize. For a US/Canada store, use a short product-description sentence first. This separates a content-adaptation test from a banner, app or checkout problem.

Where do you select a market in the content editor?

Shopify's documented market-content workflow starts from the content page:

  1. Open the product or other supported content page in Shopify admin.
  2. Choose More actions → Localize.
  3. Select the target market from the market drop-down.
  4. Select the language if needed, then enter the adaptation in an available field.
  5. Save.

The language must be available in that market. Do not look only for a language selector on the app's initial screen and conclude that same-language adaptations are impossible. Conversely, if the resource has no suitable market field, identify what owns that content before following generic instructions for a different resource.

How do you test a US and Canadian English product page?

Use an illustrative change such as “Explore our US assortment” for the US and “Explore our Canadian assortment” for Canada. Open the storefront, select the US, keep English selected and check the product description. Switch to Canada and repeat on the same product.

Check that you changed the intended sentence and that shared information, such as ingredients or care instructions, remains accurate. Try the mobile view too. If the expected sentence does not appear, record the selected country, resource and field; those details make a useful support report.

Tip - Start with neutral wording rather than a shipping promise. Once the adaptation works, replace the test sentence with the approved regional copy.

Why might a market-specific theme banner not appear?

A saved adaptation is not proof that your storefront can display it. Shopify's per-market theme documentation separates theme customization from ordinary content adaptation.

Which plan supports per-market theme customization?

Per-market theme customization requires Advanced or higher. Basic and Grow share the same theme customization across markets. This affects homepage banners, announcement bars and block content, even when Translate & Adapt offers same-language adaptation fields.

On an eligible plan, open Markets → select market → Online store → Add theme customization. Edit the relevant section or block and save. You customize the published theme's market experience; you do not publish a separate theme for each country.

What happens when a field can be saved but cannot display?

Shopify warns that some adaptation fields accept and save values even when the store's plan cannot display those market-specific theme changes. Re-entering the same wording will not resolve that restriction. Check the plan first, then the selected market and the section that owns the text.

Global theme settings, including typography and colors, cannot vary by market through this feature. If a theme exposes promotional text as a global setting rather than section content, do not assume it has the same capabilities as a market-customizable block.

What should you check before promising localized promotions?

Test the message and the offer together. For an illustrative US/Canada campaign, record the wording, currency, qualifying cart and destination for each market. This catches a correct regional sentence advertising an incorrectly configured benefit.

Does the offer apply at checkout as well as in the copy?

For “free shipping over CAD 100,” test a Canadian address with a qualifying cart, then one below the threshold. Check the actual checkout rate rather than only the product-page message. Where supported, fixed shipping rates in local currencies let you configure a regional amount; Shopify Payments and compatible shipping zones are requirements.

For price-based shipping rates, Shopify compares the cart total after discounts and before taxes. Test a discount too: a cart initially above your threshold may fall below it. Use a fresh checkout because an abandoned checkout can retain earlier rates. These checks come from Shopify's shipping-rate troubleshooting guide.

Are a theme app block or third-party app rendering the content?

If only an app's message remains unchanged, check that app's localization support. Translate & Adapt cannot translate third-party content that is not exposed as a supported Shopify resource or storefront locale file. Send the app developer the exact message and the markets involved; adapting the product description will not necessarily change an app's separately stored text.

Which option should you use for different content in each market?

For two English-speaking markets, start with the smallest change that solves the customer problem:

  • Different product or page wording: adapt the supported resource with Translate & Adapt.
  • Different banners or blocks: check your plan and per-market theme support.
  • Different prices or product ranges: configure the applicable catalog.
  • Different delivery offers: configure shipping, then adapt the message.

Use the setting that controls the underlying difference, then check the complete customer experience in each market.

The practical recommendation is to adapt the copy where Shopify supports it, configure the commercial rules separately, and verify both in the storefront and checkout. You can keep the language shared while making the regional experience useful and accurate.
