How to Let Customers Schedule Shopify Gift Cards for a Recipient

Gift-card workflow from purchase and fulfillment to the buyer receipt and recipient email.

Overview

Shopify can send a purchased gift card to a recipient immediately or on a chosen date when your theme supports the recipient form. Scheduled delivery uses an approximate window, not a guaranteed hour. Enable the fields, check gift-card fulfillment and review both notification templates before promoting holiday delivery. This guide covers the setup and the tests that confirm the buyer and recipient receive the right information.

Can Shopify send a gift card to someone else on a chosen date?

Use this feature when the buyer wants someone else to receive a digital gift card with a personal note. For holiday campaigns, make the product page, cart and receipt describe the same delivery choice. A delivery date for a digital code is separate from the shipping date of any physical products in the order.

Which theme features make recipient delivery available?

Shopify documents support in Dawn and the Horizon family, with the recipient feature included from version 9 of its free Online Store 2.0 themes. Vintage themes do not support this customization. For a third-party or modified theme, confirm the setting and form behavior with its developer; the theme’s appearance alone does not prove support.

Is a scheduled send date a guaranteed delivery time?

A selected date is not an exact-hour appointment. Keep seasonal copy accurate: invite the shopper to choose a send date without promising midnight arrival. Someone arranging a surprise should know that the buyer receipt and the recipient’s gift-card email serve different purposes. Check both inboxes during your test instead of treating a successful payment as the end of the workflow.

Step 1 - Check the gift-card product and theme support

Choose the real gift-card product before editing its template. The Shopify gift-card overview distinguishes a gift-card product from an ordinary item with a gift-card name. Only the appropriate product type participates in native issuance on fulfillment.

Is the item a real Shopify gift-card product?

Check the item in your product admin, including the denomination the customer will buy. A regular product called “Holiday Voucher” does not become a Shopify gift card because of its title or image. If your storefront also sells physical gift boxes, keep those products and their delivery information distinguishable so the customer understands which purchase provides a redeemable balance.

What should you do if the recipient form setting is missing?

If the recipient setting is absent, check theme support before adding isolated form fields. A complete custom implementation needs submission handling and recipient validation as well as visible inputs. Give your theme developer the recipient-form implementation guide and ask them to verify the product, cart and error states together. Work on a duplicate theme so you can review the change before publication.

Step 2 - Enable recipient email, message and send-date fields

Preview the gift-card product while editing the intended theme. Otherwise you can spend time configuring a generic product view and miss the actual template used by the campaign.

Where is the recipient form in the Buy buttons block?

  1. Open Online Store and edit the intended theme.
  2. Choose Products > Default product, then change the preview to your gift-card product.
  3. Open Product information > Buy buttons.
  4. Enable Show recipient information form for gift card products and save.

If the gift-card product uses a different assigned template, check that template too. Open the actual product page afterwards and verify the form appears in the purchasing path shoppers will use.

Which fields should shoppers fill in for a holiday gift?

The recipient email directs delivery; name, message and send date are optional fields. Leave the date blank for an immediate-send test, then create a second test using a future date. Use inboxes you control and a recognisable test note. Check that the cart retains the intended details when you change the denomination or return to the product page.

Step 3 - Verify fulfillment and the two gift-card notifications

Gift-card creation depends on fulfillment of the gift-card order line. Check whether your store fulfills that line automatically or whether staff must do so. A payment confirmation alone is not a complete recipient-delivery test. When a scheduled gift is involved, issuance and the scheduled email also need to be distinguished.

What does the recipient receive and what does the buyer receive?

The New gift card notification supplies the recipient’s redeemable code. The buyer gets the Gift card receipt, including a copy and sent-or-scheduled details. Shopify’s gift-card notification guidance describes these roles. Review the wording of the buyer’s receipt in your test: it should not make a future scheduled email sound as though the recipient has already opened or received it.

How do you preserve custom notification templates and languages?

Review New gift card and Gift card receipt under Settings > Notifications > Customer notifications. Save copies of any edited templates before changing them. Check every supported notification language and preserve your branding while adding missing recipient information. Reverting to default can remove custom work, so it should be a deliberate choice, not the first troubleshooting step. Preview each template and verify an actual test email.

Step 4 - Explain scheduled delivery limits accurately

Record the customer-facing timing explanation alongside your setup notes. Support staff should be able to explain what the buyer selected, whether the gift-card line was fulfilled, and whether the recipient email is immediate or scheduled without inventing a precise send time.

Whose timezone determines the send window?

The Shopify Help recipient guide describes scheduled sending approximately between 4 am and 10 am in the purchasing customer’s timezone. The developer guide describes a browser timezone offset and a shop-timezone fallback if that offset is missing. Its wording about recipient-local time differs from Help. For a custom form, confirm the offset handling; do not promise the recipient’s own local morning without verification.

How far ahead can a customer schedule a gift card?

The developer documentation permits scheduling up to 90 days ahead and limits a message to 200 characters and a recipient name to 255. Test the form’s boundary handling, including an invalid date and a message over the limit. Keep any storefront explanation close to the form so customers can fix a rejected submission before leaving the product page.

Step 5 - Test immediate and scheduled gift-card purchases

Run separate immediate and scheduled scenarios. This is a recommended merchant test plan, not a claim that a live gift-card order has already been tested on your store. Use distinct buyer and recipient inboxes so you can tell which notification each receives.

What should you check from Add to cart through fulfillment?

  1. Buy the gift-card product with a recipient email and short message, leaving the send date empty.
  2. Verify the submitted details in the cart and complete the intended checkout path.
  3. Confirm the gift-card line is fulfilled and check both notifications.
  4. Repeat with a future send date; verify the buyer’s scheduled details and the recipient email when that window arrives.
  5. Repeat on mobile and in each relevant storefront language.

Also test buying for yourself without recipient details. Record failures by stage: form submission, cart data, fulfillment, buyer receipt or recipient delivery. That makes a support report more useful than “the gift card did not arrive.”

Do accelerated checkout buttons support recipient-form validation?

Shopify’s developer documentation says recipient-form validation is supported through Add to Cart, not accelerated checkout buttons. Check that the form uses the supported path and handles returned errors. This is a product-form restriction; do not generalize it into a claim that all accelerated payment methods are unavailable later in checkout. Ask the theme developer to review any shortcut that bypasses the recipient form.

How is digital gift-card delivery different from a gift-box message?

For physical gift-box orders, personalization and shipping remain their own workflows. A greeting-card message attached to a product is information for the order; a native digital gift card is a redeemable monetary code. Avoid giving those different products identical delivery instructions.

Does a gift message on a Biscuits bundle issue a gift-card code?

No. A message collected with a Biscuits bundle is not, by itself, native Shopify gift-card issuance or scheduled digital delivery. Use bundle builders with custom fields for physical-gift personalization. For recipients at different physical addresses, see sending gift boxes to multiple addresses. Keep the digital gift-card recipient form on the supported Shopify gift-card product.

Where should currency and redemption questions be handled?

Handle currency and redemption through Shopify’s gift-card settings and documentation, separately from email scheduling. A correct recipient address does not establish that a gift-card currency matches the recipient’s intended checkout. Before a cross-border holiday promotion, verify the offered denomination and redemption path. Finish the delivery setup with the two-inbox test, then use that result to write clear product-page and support copy.
