Wie man Lagerbestände und Lagerbestände für jeden Markt in Shopify Markets begrenzt

Overview

Shopify does not assign a separate inventory quantity to each Market. Instead, regional product availability depends on inventory at fulfillment locations, the shipping zones those locations serve, whether the destination belongs to an active Market, and any catalog rules applied to that Market. This guide rebuilds the original Australia-and-United-States example using Shopify’s current fulfillable-inventory behavior. By the end, you will have a repeatable way to configure and test which stock customers can view and purchase in each region.

How does Shopify fulfillable inventory work?

Fulfillable inventory is the stock available at locations that can deliver to a customer’s shipping zone. Shopify uses this relationship when deciding whether a product can be purchased at checkout. A product can have stock somewhere in the business and still be unavailable to a particular customer when that stock is held at a location that does not ship to the customer’s destination.

All Shopify stores now restrict checkout to inventory at locations that can serve the customer’s shipping zone. The former option to sell from all locations to all shipping zones was removed. Stores created before April 2024 that never activated fulfillable inventory can still have a storefront visibility control called Show only fulfillable inventory. That control affects whether unavailable products remain visible; it does not let customers complete checkout with stock from an ineligible location.

This same distinction matters when diagnosing bundle availability. If a bundle appears to use stock from an unintended warehouse, follow the separate guide to diagnose a bundle that is counting the wrong location’s stock.

Which Shopify settings control inventory by market?

Four Shopify concepts work together:

  • Location: A warehouse, shop or other place where Shopify tracks inventory and from which orders can be fulfilled.
  • Market: A customer segment, commonly based on country or region, that controls localized storefront settings such as currency, language, domains, catalogs and pricing.
  • Shipping zone: A group of countries or regions that share shipping rates inside a shipping profile.
  • Fulfillment location: A location assigned to a shipping profile or location group so that it can serve the configured zones.

A country must belong to an active Market before you can sell there. Its shipping zone and rates then determine which fulfillment locations can serve customers in that country. Inventory remains attached to product variants at locations; Markets do not create separate stock counts.

If you need to include or exclude products, or change prices for a Market, use a catalog. Catalog availability is separate from location inventory: both the catalog rules and fulfillable stock must permit the purchase.

Step 1 - Set up your fulfillment locations

Start by creating the locations that represent the warehouses in your regional setup. The original example uses one location in Australia and one in the United States.

  1. From Shopify admin, go to Settings > Locations.
  2. Select Add location.
  3. Enter the warehouse name and address, including the correct country.
  4. Activate the setting that allows the location’s inventory to fulfil online orders.
  5. Repeat the process for each warehouse that will supply online customers.

After creating the locations, assign the relevant product variants and quantities to each one. A recorded on-hand quantity is not useful for online availability unless the variant is active at that location and the location can fulfil online orders.

Step 2 - Create and activate Shopify Markets

Create or update the Markets that contain the countries you intend to serve. This step comes before configuring a new shipping zone because a country or region must belong to an active Market before it can be added to that zone.

  1. From Shopify admin, go to Markets.
  2. Create a Market for the United States, or open an existing Market that should contain it.
  3. Add the United States to the Market’s included countries or regions.
  4. Set the Market to Active.
  5. Confirm that Australia remains included in the appropriate active Market.

Activating a Market makes the region eligible for sale, but it does not by itself provide shipping rates or inventory. Those are configured through shipping profiles and fulfillment locations.

Step 3 - Configure fulfillment locations and shipping zones

Next, configure the shipping profile so each warehouse serves the intended countries. In this example, the Australian location serves Australia and the other international destinations you support, while the United States warehouse serves the United States.

  1. Go to Settings > Shipping and delivery.
  2. Open the relevant shipping profile, such as the General profile.
  3. Review the profile’s fulfillment locations or location groups.
  4. Remove the United States from a zone served by the Australian location when that warehouse should not fulfil United States orders.
  5. Create or edit the location group for the United States warehouse.
  6. Add a United States shipping zone and the appropriate rates.
  7. Save the shipping profile.

The important outcome is the relationship, not the historical button labels shown in the screenshots: each location group needs the zones and rates for the destinations it should serve. Review Shopify’s current shipping-profile interface as labels can change.

Step 4 - Configure storefront visibility for fulfillable inventory

Checkout always requires stock at a location that can ship to the customer’s zone. Some older stores also have a visibility control that determines whether products without fulfillable inventory remain visible on product and collection pages.

  1. Go to Settings > Shipping and delivery.
  2. In the Shipping section, open the fulfillable-inventory link when it is available.
  3. Select Show only fulfillable inventory if you want products to display only when an eligible location has stock for that customer.
  4. Deselect it if you want unavailable products to remain visible. Customers still cannot complete checkout without fulfillable inventory.
  5. Save the setting.

If your store does not show this visibility setting, that does not mean checkout can use inventory from every location. Shopify applies shipping-zone-aware checkout availability across stores.

Step 5 - Test inventory in each Market

Test the final customer experience instead of relying only on the admin configuration. Use a product that has different available quantities at the Australian and United States locations.

  1. Confirm that your theme exposes a country or Market selector.
  2. Choose a product that is available at one serving location and unavailable at the other.
  3. Visit the storefront in the first Market and record whether the product is visible and can be added to checkout.
  4. Switch to the second Market and repeat the same checks.
  5. Test a real destination address at checkout to confirm that an eligible shipping rate is returned.
  6. Repeat the process for any custom catalog that includes or excludes the product.

When a result differs from your expectation, check the product’s available quantity, whether the variant is active at the location, the shipping profile’s fulfillment locations and zones, the Market’s status and catalog, and the checkout address.

Common questions

Does Shopify Markets store separate inventory?

No. Inventory quantities are stored against product variants at locations. Markets can control audience, localization, catalogs and pricing, while shipping profiles determine which locations can serve each destination.

Can a product be visible but unavailable at checkout?

Yes. On eligible older stores, deselecting Show only fulfillable inventory can leave the product visible even when no location serving that customer has stock. Checkout still requires fulfillable inventory and a valid shipping configuration.

Why is stock available in one country but not another?

The countries may be served by different fulfillment locations, shipping zones or catalogs. Compare the product’s location quantities and activation, the location group serving each country, the Market status, catalog inclusion and shipping rates.

Does this limit the quantity shown to a Market?

It limits purchasable availability to stock at locations that can serve the customer. It does not create a separate Market-level inventory quantity. If several eligible locations can serve the same zone, their available stock can contribute to fulfillment according to Shopify’s routing and checkout behavior.
